There's already dozens of these in SL, this is one Rez made! The unique-ish parts are:

  1. If you're on mainland, how close you are to a coastline matters. We've mapped out the waters of the SL mainland and you're typcally either Coastal, in a Sea, or sometimes in a freshwater biome. SL's individual named water bodies will eventually have unique catches and badges to collect.
  2. No pay-to-win. You can run the game entirely after getting the starter kit. You don't need to pay Rez Gray a single solitary linden. (But there ARE things you can buy with lindens that won't really improve your odds.).
  3. You can redeem your catches for the fake play money 'BaitCoin' (B$), this is used to but more bait, and in the future purchase unlocks and some exclusive goodies. These can't be redeemed for actual currency OR bought directly with actual currency.
  4. You can tweak your own parcel's biomes witth 'biome bouys'.
  5. The game doesn't really care where you are in relation to SL water.

The HUD and Rod

Current we have one(1) freebie rod compatible with the game. We're working on others. You'll need to attach it to play.

The HUD, which you'll see called an 'MFD', is a dynamic text display system. It has a lot of text display cells that can hide, recolor, act as buttons, etc. There's a real, bespoke HUD update coming, but this display also needs wide audience testing .

Idle Screen

  • 'Cast' or 'Pick Bait' , you'll either cast a line or be forced to pick a bait first.
  • 'Tacklebox' , you click this and select a bait or lure.
  • 'Bucket', your caught fish, in weight, by rarity.
  • 'Loot/Trash', your loot bag.
  • 'Biome', the type of water the game think you're standing in.
  • A system menu with a house, a '≡' button, a '?', and a 'minimize' button

System Menu (the little ≡ button ) This lets your enlarge or shrink the hud. It also lets you pick from several display color themes and fonts for your reading preferences. Rez puts a lot of effort into readability these days.

Tacklebox This lists the baits and lures in your inventory. Click one to set it on your hook.

Fish Bucket Where previously we displayed individual fish catches, we currently display your total weights along rarity tiers while Rez's autism builds out the inventory sheets.

Trash/Loot As you fish, sometimes you'll pull up loot or trash. It is stored here and can be paged through.

Baits, Lures, and What Fish Want

This might be a little overbuilt, but there are four variables in the tackle/fish pool. Water Preference (Fresh,Salt,Either), Smell, Wriggle, and Shininess. Each tackle has it's own values and will catch different types of fish. There's a lot of overlap because fish are pretty dumb. But some rarer fish might have very narrow prefernces.

Baits - These are consumed when you catch a fish. No-hits or Loot hits don't consume a bait. Lures - Lures have a durability value that isn't visible yet, but it'll tell you when you're down to about 10 hits.

Using the Fishing Stall

When you run out of tackle, or feel your bucket is too heavy (there's no limit on it yet, but...), you can visit an OMFG Fishing Stall to redeem your bucket and loot, and but more tackle.

Presently, the only permanent one is at the OMFG Store in Dutch Harbor. Presently it's just a button to tell your attached HUD to do things.

Future Plans

  • More rod types for things that need different rods like deep ocean
  • Better animations that makes sense when sitting
  • Integration or detection of certain boats.
  • A 'fish finder' function for said boats or attachments. There's a lot of underlying mechanics to this.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Why did you switch to a text hud? A: The Septocell Multi-Function Display (SeptoMFD) system is made for adaptable, rapid app and game prototyping. Rez doesn't have the spoons for bespoke displays while he's still randomly adding features.

Q: Will you migrate the old OMFG player data to the new system? A: Probably the balances but not the inventory.

Q: So this game is tracking me? A: We don't store the movement. But when you change regions or teleport the HUD will check to see what 'biome' you're in. If you're in a region that's never been visted with an ATHR device, we might store that region in an index for future mapping system purposes but we're not tracking you specifically.

Q: How do you plan to monetize this? A: When we get other ATHR systems online we might let you pay to be a 'premium fishing hole'.

Q: Do the Biome Bouys work in 1.7? A: Not yet. I'll have to issue an update.
